Zog Sports

As my move out of the city approaches, I’ve been getting sentimental and thought I’d share some of my joys while I’ve been here.  For those of you that may be new to New York City, I’d highly recommend checking out Zog Sports.

If you’re a fan of recreational, intramural, co-ed sports and charities, or you just want to have some fun, meet new people and go out drinking afterward, well this is the perfect combo for you.

Take your pick from any of the following sports:

  • Football – 2 hand touch
  • Volleyball Indoor
  • Soccer
  • Dodgeball
  • Softball
  • Kickball
  • Basketball
  • Wiffle ball
  • Hockey
  • Bowling
  • Rugby

For me I actually signed up for both Volleyball and Football … yes I am that hardcore!  Once you choose your sports, depending on your level of skill, you can be in any of the 5 following tiers:

  • Players – You’re like the NFL … ridiculously good
  • Sorta Players – Not quite NFL but more like professional college
  • High Casual – You played in High school AND college intramural teams
  • Low Casual – You played in High school OR college intramural teams
  • Extremely Casual –  You just want to drink before and after the game or you just don’t want to be decimated

For me … it’s more of Extremely Casual for Volleyball and Casual for Football.  You can also either sign up as a team if you have a good group of folks that you want to play with, or you can just join an open team of random people from all over the city.

The games take place in different locations all over the city.  And best part is that all the registration money that’s left over after paying the refs and field fees goes to a charity of your choice!  Yes … philanthropy is FUN!  Honestly, I don’t know how I ever existed without these leagues! Each team is required to be co-ed and they have some pretty good rules to balance out the guy/girl ratios like minimum number of girls on the field at any time, required girl plays, etc.

Good people, good causes, good times!  Any of you readers know of leagues like this out in those other cities?
